Facebook, Inc. ~ My Pre-History

I joined Facebook 10 years ago today! I wrote this summary of the company’s early development before then, before I had a clue of how pervasive it would become in my life. Can you remember life before FB? ~ Fred

Penman on Safari (in Heidelberg)

Lamy makes a brightly colored plastic fountain pen called the Safari and I love mine. My favorite has an italic nib so I can imitate the sensuous sweeping strokes of Renaissance masters. I even have an optic yellow model I filled with (Japanese) fluorescent ink to use as a highlighter.

Though they’re fun and lightweight, lots of serious German precision and beaucoup robotics goes into each one, as this unprecedented factory footage reveals. The plant itself is a Bauhaus masterpiece; form follows function. Confession: I never knew how the company name was pronounced, which is rather lame of me I suppose.

Historians, contemplate the application of high tech to the somewhat anachronistic fountain pen, which is actually only a century and a half old. These latest iterations don’t leak, write smoother than anything else, and can give your signature a hipster cred that is hard to duplicate with a mass-market disposable ballpoint or soulless corporate rollerball.

~ Pretty much everything you would want to know about Russian trolleybuses. Lately Trolza f/k/a Uritsky have announced plans to open a transplant in Buenos Aires, making electric buses with Siberian-designed lithium-ion batteries. It’s a small, small world. I understand the firm dates to the 19th century and I wonder if Anna Karenina or the Karamazov Bros. ever rode in their coaches. Now that would be something to blog about. ~ @fridrix

Kensington Reopening!

After years of anticipation, International Paper is finally reopening a refurbished Kensington Mansion in Eastover, South Carolina, with a guided tour on June 9, 2018. Unfortunately this event sold out fast. The Facebook page seems to be the best resource for photos and things; I didn’t see any mention yet on the IP PR page:

And take a gander at that copper roof, would ya? Though new it’s already cloaked in a patina in the humid river basin. It’s over the creek from me and I have been remiss not to visit their Christmas open houses.

Kensington FB 2018International Paper makes fiber-based packaging materials; its global supply chain makes it a good international business story. It’s a great day in South Carolina, as Nikki Haley might say, for corporate news with a historical angle.
